Is platooning technology the wave of the future for trucking?

Hello, everyone and thanks for reading.

Several companies are starting to look toward truck platooning as a solution to driver shortages and fuel costs. Platooning, (or peloton formation) is where two or more trucks travel in a closely spaced group, linked electronically to accelerate, brake, and turn as one unit.
Two or more trucks would drive 20 to 75 feet apart, saving fuel by reducing aerodynamic drag.

Some problems with platooning are keeping other drivers from entering the platoon line, driver boredom, accident liability, etc.
I would think the first use of the technology would be on coast - to - coast runs on specified routes where one driver would drive the lead truck while the other sleeps, then the trucks would trade positions for the other driver's rest period.

Eventually the technology would need to require a driver only in the lead truck, not necessarily driving but just to take over if a system fails. After all, it doesn't make much sense to have a driver in a truck that can drive itself, especially if it is not the lead truck.
