Eliminating wind noise and leaks on 4200/4300/4400 Doors

Today I want to post an easy way to eliminate wind noise and leaks on 4200/4300/4400 doors.

Nearly all 4200/4300/4400 cab doors will develop wind noise and/or leaks at the top of the door. Wind noise can become obtrusive to the driver and occupants, and sometimes daylight can even be seen at the top of the door while at highway speed.

Methods such as extra foam weatherstrip usually fail to solve the problem and are unsightly. New hinges are also not the solution.

Luckily the solution the is simple and easily done. It is an OEM specified fix, although not widely known among dealers.

Merely make up a 1/8 inch thick steel shim to the pattern shown, and insert it between the lower hinge and the body. It is best to install the shim with the door shut and latched, so nothing needs to be adjusted after installation. Open the hood and the hinge bolts can be loosened, then a pry bar used to give clearance to drop the shim in behind the hinge.

Using galvanized or painted steel will keep rust streaks from appearing.

Believe it or not, installing this shim is all it takes to eliminate leaks and noise.

This assumes that the hinges are not worn out and that the weatherstrip is reasonably good.
