Freightliner Supertruck

Hello everyone.
New advances in vehicle technology are on the way.

I recently came across this site for the Freightliner concept truck.
The site outlines technologies the manufacturers are working on today, and it also is a really cool website.

Note some of the technological and aerodynamic similarities to the future (imaginary) truck I wrote about in an earlier post on this blogsite.

While all this is exiting, what really gets me going is the possibility of incab tech advancements like touch screen dash displays, ethernet device connectivity between components, and especially connectivity between vehicles and between vehicles and highway infrastructure.

The last area, that of connecting vehicles wirelessly to sensors and other sources for traffic information, microlocality weather conditions, mapping and route info and more, will have a profound effect on everyone's driving experience.

A vehicle's further connectivity to the outside world may have a larger impact on fuel savings and efficient travel times than all other advances put together. It will also impact how trucks are repaired,  the knowledge needed to do those repairs, and who drives them.

It may be a good time for mechanics to start learning about sensor, wireless, and ethernet systems to get out in front of the technology. When people are needed to repair and install such systems those with knowledge will be first in line for advancement. There may even be a new repair position created using those skills.

Future advances like automated trailer hookup and docking may make those skills less important to the driving job, bringing more drivers to that position.

Thanks for reading,
Bruce
